The Nusuru Fund A $ can change the lives of desperate people |
|
Daines’ Story At fourteen, Daines Mapunda exceeded everyone’s expectations when she passed the entrance exam to a local government boarding school 5kms from her home in Hanga village. Unfortunately, yet all too commonly Daines was in no position to pay the school fees. Living alone with her mother, Magret and living off only the food they farmed or hunted themselves, Daines’s chances of ever going to school were slim. For weeks Daines cried at home as Magret spent days trying to find someone to support her daughter. On the morning of January 21st 2008, Daines visited Fulgence Mluwili in a last, desperate search for help. A promise by Laura Kearley, a visiting volunteer, of 100,000.00 TSH (approx. $AUS 100 and $90 US) per year for four years was all it took to support Daines and it’s made the difference between a bleak future and one filled with hope. Two days later Daines was settled at school and working hard to make something of her life. All she needed was the chance.

A Vision for the Future It was after having met Daines and Magret that Laura and Fulgence realised that they had a responsibility to create a change. To make such a difference to just some of the teenagers in and around Hanga village whose right to an education had been forgotten was something they could not pass up. The Nusuru Fund has been established to create a link between those who desperately need help and those willing to lend a hand. Created on a sponsorship basis, the fund will provide an opportunity for students to take action in making something more of their lives. Students in need are plenty, all that is missing is the promise of help, the platform from which to begin to change the future of the Hanga community and its people.
