St. Maurus’ Hanga Abbey is an independent monastic community that belongs to a wider community in the Benedictine congregation of St. Ottillien.  The Benedictine Abbey at Hanga was founded by the late Fr. Ebehard Spiess OSB in 1957.  His founding vision was to allow the Tanzanian population to live a monastic life in the spirit of St. Benedict by adjusting the Rule of St. Benedict to fit the African culture and way of life.

Like all other Benedictine monasteries, our motto is “Ora et Labora,” literally meaning “Pray and Work.”  As a part of our missionary work for the Catholic Church, the monks of our community engage themselves in numerous social development activities and humanitarian services here in Tanzania and throughout East Africa.

By living in accordance with the Rule of St. Benedict we also pride ourselves in the hospitality and humility that we extend to our many guests and visitors.  We thank God for the opportunity to share our community with you and encourage you to browse through the website and, if interested, we gladly invite you to come and visit us in Hanga.
